“There’s about $200 worth of expandable foam in the doors,” says Mr Carppe, who welded up the holes in the floor of the car, built a bow on the front and filled the vehicle with safety equipment.
“It even comes with a motorhome and camping guide in case we decide to camp anywhere – unfortunately it is for the North Island.”
Mr Carppe took the car for its second lake trial today on Lake Wakatipu, stunning tourists who watched on as it putted along powered by a six-horsepower outboard en gine.
“On the water you can actually steer it a little bit with the steering wheel, the front wheels work as a bit of a rudder,” says Mr Carppe’s friend Roger Lee, who was also in the car.
The next outing for the car will be at the Queenstown Winter Festival’s Birdman competition this coming Sunday.
