Ngaruawahia sandwich gang now feeding close to 1000 children

THE TRIBAL HUK gang has expanded their food in schools mission. They now make 925 sandwiches daily, an increase of 525 since August, for schools in Hamilton, Ngaruawahia, Taupiri, Horotiu, Huntly and Rangiriri.

Mars (enterprise, enthusiasm, initiative) square Pholus (food and drink, nurturing) square Cupido (active in the community, create their own mission to help those less fortunate). Mercury (resourceful, efficient) square Ceres (caring, issues of taking care of people, children, comfort, nourishing, nurturing, nutrition, food).

Back then the gang was distributing sammies to 31 schools and that number has now increased to 50. The sandwich gang’s president Jamie Pink said they still have plans to feed more.

“We’ve got to 50 [schools] and we are getting about two new schools a week,” Pink said.

“I apologise to all the people, the progress has been a bit slow, but we haven’t gone back.”

“We’ve hit the 50 mark, so we are celebrating that. We are getting there but we know there are more hungry kids out there that need a kai. We need to make sure they get a feed too.”

Pink and the gang have a foundation called the Kai 4 the Future Foundation and kick-started it with a sum of $20,000

The foundation was set up in August to collect money to purchase food for hungry children across the country.

For transparency and legitimacy Pink brought community leaders on board to be signatories for the foundation’s accounts.

“Over $4,000 has been put in by the public – we are so thankful for that. We really appreciate it, it helps and we ask you all to keep up the good work.”

Besides making sandwiches, the Tribal Huks are preparing for their annual Christmas party which they have held for the past four years.

“It’s on the 11th of December, everybody is welcome,” Pink said.

“We block off a street in Ngaruawahia have heaps of fun things for families, so bring your kids there’s going to be tonnes of food and Santa Claus – Hana Ko Ko will be there as well. There’s going to be gifts for the little kiddies. It’s massive.”
