Footage shows handlers at the Central Police Dog Training School, decorating their hounds with traditional garlands and vermilion powder, and offering them treats.
"On this special day we worship them because they work for the whole year for the purpose of crime investigation," said Dr Deuti Gurung, Senior Superintendent of Police. "[They work] in the role of tracking the criminals or finding out the drugs, and locating the explosives and searching of the dead or buried people."
The dogs also showed off their specialist skills and medals were awarded for the best behaved.
Kukur Tihar is the second day of the five-day Tihar festival, Nepal’s version of Diwali. Dogs are believed to be the messengers of Yama, the god of death and justice, while believers worship them to please him.
