"We mean no harm, but are trying to bring the climate crisis to the attention of New Zealanders and politicians."
They say that Wood, the transport minister, told them at a meeting that restoring passenger rail is not in his top 10 priorities.
In a statement today, Wood said: "Everyone has the right to protest, but this kind of vandalism is unacceptable, and frankly alienates people from the important cause of climate action, especially given our Government's clear record on rail investment and taking action on climate change.
"Promoting the benefits of rail would be a far more productive activity for the good of New Zealand and the planet.
"Today's action is unwarranted, and the public will see it for what it is, a small group of the community who are increasingly out of step from the rest of New Zealand."
Woods said she was saddened her "staff, local businesses and people in the neighbourhood have to deal with the mess they made".
"It's not activism, it's vandalism," she added.
Restore Passenger Rail protesters have previously been arrested for blocking traffic in Wellington.
Police could be seen at Robertson's office after the incident this morning.
In a statement, a police spokesperson said they "received a report of damage to a building on Willis St, Wellington at about 6.40am" and are following "positive lines of inquiry into the incident.
"We are also aware of damage to buildings on McCarthy St in Christchurch, Great King St in Dunedin and Dominion Rd in Auckland," the spokesperson added.
National's transport spokesperson Simeon Brown said police and the courts needed to "crack down" on "these zealots".
"Transport Minister Michael Wood was foolish or naïve to give these activists the time of day when he met with them in his office for a cup of tea and some scones earlier this month," he said.
"There are plenty of ways for New Zealanders to be heard on climate change and transport without defacing the urban environment."
