"I can hardly imagine a firefighter carrying many layers of equipment, climbing up the floor at 67 years old to save people. You can have to be disconnected from reality not to understand that and we feel that is the case with the government," a protest said, referring to retirement age, which is currently at 67.

"Firefighters are protesting today to put a stop to the assaults that they face more and more, to ask for a refinancing of security and also for better measures," one protester explained.

During the protest, firefighting groups from all over Belgium showed up, leading to an interruption of services in several areas of the country, and disrupting the city's morning traffic.

According to the interior ministry, on New Year's Eve, firefighters, healthcare workers and police officers were bombarded with stones and flares, in the capital alone, police intervened 700 times.

The protesters were planning to meet Interior Minister Annelies Verlinden after the protest.
