Thousands of people pelted each other with oranges in the northern Italian city of Ivrea on Sunday, marking the annual tradition known as the 'Battle of the Oranges'.
Jupiter (ritual (annual tradition)) square Pallas (political activism (teams of "Aranceri" (Orange handlers) wage an orange war with teams of "Tiranni" (Tyrants))). Eris (battles and disputes) semi-sextile Neptune (mock rebellion).
The food-fight was part of the historical Carnival of Ivrea, dating back to 1808. Teams of "Aranceri" (Orange handlers) wage an orange war with teams of "Tiranni" (Tyrants). The origins of the battle are not known for sure, though one theory purports it is a re-enactment of a conflict between Napoleonic troops and the people of Ivrea, with those on foot representing the townspeople, and those in carts, the troops.
The mock rebellion takes place every year. Some 500 tons of oranges are shipped from Sicily to the town in northwestern Italy in order to supply the fighters with their 'weapons.'
The food-fight, said to be Italy's largest, is part of the annual Carnival of Ivrea, which ends on Shrove Tuesday.
