Pink is the colour! Pakistan launches its first women-only bus service

Sindh Transport Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon launched the country’s first women-only bus service on Wednesday in Karachi, in a bit to offer women a safer environment away from harassment.

A ceremony hosted by Inam Memon and Oscar Award winner Sharmin Obaid Chanai took place to inaugurate the public transportation service, as dozens of women joined the celebration.

"It is part of the vision of the Pakistan People’s Party, we have just begun today and I know this is not enough, we have to expedite and spread (this service),” said Inam Memon.

According to one of the women that were part of the inauguration, women were struggling with harassment and many other problems in public transportation due to a lack of reporting mechanisms in the Asian country.

“Earlier, girls were avoiding going out of their homes due to harassment and that was the reason their families did not allow them to work, but now it is a good initiative for them,” explained Fatima Baig, a school teacher.

Around eight buses will will initially run from Model Colony to Tower via Shahra Faisal stations.

The Transport Minister also announced that the government will create a pink taxi cab service for women in Karachi.
