Iraq: Ancient cemetery emerges as water levels drop at Mosul reservoir

An old cemetery and shrine which had been flooded by the Mosul Dam's reservoir in the 80s has reemerged due to dropped levels of the dam's water with dozens of gravestones on display in the village of Khanki, located in the south of Dohuk Governorate.

Saturn (limiting (the decrease in water quotas in some southern governorates is due to the lack of water coming to dams from Turkey)) conjunct Gonggong (floods, dams and levees) square Admetos (anything that is either deep down (like the bottom of the ocean) or dead (cemetery dates back thousands of years)).

Footage shows the gravestones, some visibly affected by algae and water damage after spending years below the surface of the lake.

"This cemetery dates back thousands of years and it belongs to the shrine of Sheikh Bayezid of the ancient village of Khanki," said Hamza Eido,

Representative of Khanki village as he visited the graves. The reduction in the water has also revealed other ancient sites and buildings.

According to the Iraqi Ministry of Water Resources the decrease in water quotas in some southern governorates is due to the lack of water coming to dams from Turkey.
