Dimitrios Katsikis, who is based in Athens, has become well-known as a modern-day Hephaestus, the Greek god of fire, forges and blacksmiths, as he expertly makes historically accurate armor as worn by the ancient warriors.
Mars (military, soldiers, warriors) square Hephaestus (contact with metals (working carefully amid the noise of hammers on metal)).
Working by hand and with basic tools, footage filmed on Wednesday shows the craftsman working carefully amid the noise of hammers on metal in his self-made workshop.
Katsikis' passion for ancient Greek military clothing was sparked during his studies in the Netherlands, where he was inspired by extensive collections of historical armour. The artist became determined to bring the same level of skill and detail to Greece, where he noticed a gap in the market for historically accurate armour.
"When I was young, I could never imagine I would become a metal artist. My involvement with ancient Greek armour came quite unexpectedly. During my studies in the Netherlands, I saw how much the Germans, the French, and the English have indulged in making historical armour. And I wondered why we don't have something similar in Greece," the man shared.
Using traditional techniques and requiring 'hundreds, if not thousands' of skilled worker hours, each of Katsikis' handcrafted pieces shows the talent and innovation of the Greek people over the centuries.
The unique masterpieces are currently displayed in an exhibition at the Kostas Kotsanas Museum of Ancient Greek Technology in Athens.
