Thailand: Monks light 100,000 lanterns in celebration of Buddha's birth, enlightenment, death

Buddhist monks lit tens of thousands of lanterns to celebrate the birth, enlightenment and death of Buddha in Pantum Thani on Saturday.

Footage shows scores of worshippers and monks meditating and praying at Wat Phra Dhammakaya temple which glowed in the light of 100,000 lanterns gracing the temple.

Participants engaged in various traditional rituals including an almsgiving ceremony for monks, a mass meditation, an ordination ceremony and various offerings before lighting the lanterns in the evening.

Vesak Day is an important day of Buddhism on the full moon day of the sixth lunar month marking the birthday and enlightenment of Buddha. In 1999, the UN General Assembly, recognised the Day of Vesak internationally to acknowledge the contribution of Buddhism to the spirituality of humanity.
