"With his great sense of smell, he has helped us obtain many results, which have been important and compelling for Colombia because it has allowed the seizure of more than 1.5 million doses (of marijuana) which will reach society and children in Colombia," said Lieutenant Colonel Nestor Fabian Castellanos.

Footage shows the seven-year-old Labrador Retriever training at the base and examining vehicles and luggage at a checkpoint alongside soldiers. The army sees him as such an asset that he has been given round the clock protection following a number of threats on his life.

"He has had a series of threats which have been known by military intelligence, in the same way through a series of audios that have arrived, where they threaten him because of the situation and the high level of drugs that he has seized on the road corridor in Cajamarca," Castellanos continued.
