Everest's highest camp appears covered with frozen garbage

A Nepal government-funded team of soldiers and Sherpas removed 11 TONS of garbage from Everest during the 2024 climbing season. The expedition’s leader said that most of the waste consisted of old tents, food packaging, gas cartridges, oxygen bottles, and climbing ropes.

Much of the trash is from older expeditions, as stricter rules and increased awareness among climbers are now in place, he noted. However, cleaning up the remaining trash in the mountains could still take years.
