The Sakrebyle Elephant Camp, near Shivamogga, celebrated World Elephant Day on Saturday by bathing and decorating the animals before the amazement of tourists.

Wearing colorful ornaments and painting in their skin, the elefants took part of a small ceremony as dozens as the park's visitors could enjoy watching the unique ritual.
"This is my first time in Karnataka and very close to elephants and it is auspicious that we came on Elephant Day and we are so close to animals, touching them. It really really feels happy and I'm actually feeling blessed to have them so near to me", said Swathi, a tourist.
"Elephants are one of the very important creatures in the forest environment, (they) are playing a major role mainly in the conservation of the forest, as well as regeneration and improvement of the forest", explained Prasanna Krishna Patagara, Deputy Conservator of Forests of the Wildlife Division.
World Elephant Day, observed annually on 12 August, is a global event with a focus on safeguarding and upholding the well-being of these animals across the world. This day is dedicated to raising awareness about the various challenges elephants confront, such as the loss of their habitats and the illegal trade in ivory through poaching, and it calls for enhanced conservation efforts.
